Arvo Pärt Centre Residency Diary - Part 5

APC Residency Diary - Part 5

The three weeks of my residency have come to an end. The question I received quite often was if I had visited Tallinn or seen anything from the country. No, I had been to Tallinn a few years ago, and I came here to work, so that’s what I did. I was at the centre between seven and ten hours a day, except for one day where I cut it to four and spent the afternoon at the beach. I was provided with a bicycle and had enough time to explore the wonderful area in the evenings and often spent the mornings at the beach.

I made 26 small format paintings (and at least ten which ended up in the bin) and composed a piece for choir, one for toy piano and four movements for string quartet. I made a concept for a solo piano piece and tried out some bits, but this will take more time. I did a lot of research and prepared everything for my olfactory experiments when I return, I am really looking forward to this.

These weeks have anchored me within myself in a new way. Working without distraction and everyday chores solidified certain modes which used to take a while to get access to. But I have to admit that I am tired, I will definitely take the next few days off and let everything sink in, very grateful.
